It has been comparatively observed that teens playing games have a less developed brain than those who are involved in doing arithmetic for around half an hour. Solving arithmetic involved a high degree of mental activity in both the hemispheres of the frontal lobe. It has also been observed that listening to music or listening to readings did not involve much of brain activity. In fact, reading out aloud is another thing which teens can do to stimulate brain activity.


Teenagers involved in playing computer video games have been seen to react to almost any other thing quite violently. Through Kawashima’s study, it was also inferred that playing computer games halted the process of brain development and also reduced their capacity of toleration. In the terms of science, it has been said that thickening the fibers in the frontal lobe of the human brain can enable the child to have control over his/her behavior, and the more the stimulation, the more is the fiber content thickened in the brain. The frontal lobe comes into action when to try to use self-control for refraining from something and if that is underdeveloped, it may easily allow you to go towards the wrong direction in life.

Since the playing of online games only helps in the development of organs related to sight and movement, it can be safely concluded that they are such things which should be kept within a limit and activities like arithmetic should be given more time. Loving your smartphone too much?

Is there such thing as loving your smartphone too much? I never used to think so. I mean, just because I like to keep mine close, doesn't make it an addiction. Right? I read an interview with neuroscientist Susan Greenfield, who suggests that digital technology has an impact on our brains. She says there's evidence of adolescents becoming obsessive towards their technology; whether it be their computer games, smartphone or TV.

I started to wonder about my smartphone habits.

Around 50 percent of the world currently own a smartphone. I'm willing to bet the vast majority wouldn't admit to spending more time than necessary on them though. And yet, the more I analyse my own habits, the more I'm starting to see Greenfield's point. There are three traits I've come to recognise in myself, that indicate I might have been addicted to my smartphone at some point.

Must look at it

The first was an untameable desire to look at my smartphone. Not because it's pretty. I just wanted to know how many messages I'd had in the last 30 seconds. It didn't matter that I was on the train, at work, or on the land-line phone, I couldn't help glancing at it. At one point I wouldn't put it away in my pocket, in case I missed something.

Hundreds of apps

It turns out having hundreds of apps on your smartphone, can indicate an obsession. Some people only have the Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and email apps. I applaud these people. The more I look through the app store, the more games and quirky apps gain my interest. There are so many to choose from. Get fed up of one, move on to another. So what if I'll only use it once or twice?

A flat battery

This was the issue that made me admit I had a problem. The more often I used my smartphone, the quicker the battery drained. Using it to excess was leaving me in constant need of a socket to plug the charger into. The average smartphone is supposed to stay powered for at least a day. The day I realised I was charging mine twice a day, was the day I pulled back from it.

So yes, I do believe Greenfield has a point. I switch it off at least once a day now, and won't let myself check my messages too often. The result? A lot of the anxiety has disappeared. It also turns out, there's interesting things happening outside. Who knew?

Half of all Smartphone Users in EU, US, and Australia Prefer Android

The latest figures published by market analysis firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech have revealed that Android smartphones are by far the most popular type of handset in the United States, Europe, and Australia. The analysis used data from a period lasting twelve weeks, which ended on the 10th of June. Over that three month period smartphones that use Android accounted for over half of all smartphones sales in the countries analysed. This is certainly a milestone to be recognised by Android’s creator, Google, because never have Android mobile devices been so popular.

Breaking Down the Figures
Out of the three continents looked at, Europe saw the biggest change. The five biggest markets were analysed, these being Great Britain, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy. The biggest increase was witnessed in Spain, where the number of Android smartphone sales more than doubled, from 41.3 percent in the previous year to 84.1 percent this year. This means that now 4 out of 5 smartphone owners in Spain use Android. Germany followed, with an increase of 27.2 percent in Android users, from 41.3 percent this time last year to 68.5 percent now. Italy came third in the rankings, up 24.3 percent, from 25.3 percent in 2011 to 49.6 percent this year. Fourth place was France, with Android sales increasing 21.3 percent from last year’s figure of 37.5 percent. The smallest increase was seen in Great Britain, where Android smartphones sales increased 8.5 percent between 2011 and 20122, up from 48.7 percent to 57.2 percent.
In similarity to markets across Europe, the sale of Android smartphones in Australia also rose significantly, from 36.4 percent last year to 56.9 percent this year, marking an overall 20.5 percent increase. Out of all the countries surveyed, the United States was the only country where the sale of Android smartphones actually decreased, down 6.8 percent, from 57 percent last year to 50.2 percent this year. Interestingly, the United States was the country that saw the largest rise in the sales of iOS mobile devices like iPhones and iPads. The only other country that saw a rise and not a fall in the sale of iOS mobile devices was Great Britain, where sales of Android mobile devices rose the smallest.

The Fall of Symbian
Many people may have completely forgotten about Symbian, or perhaps never heard of it if they are new to mobile phone technology. Once a leader in the market of smartphones, the demise of Symbian now seems imminent. There have been huge losses for Symbian in every country analysed apart from the United States, where the sales of Symbian devices actually rose, but even now they only hold a 0.5 percent market share. In Italy, where Android sales where highest, Symbian sales dropped a whopping 36.8 percent, from 40.2 percent to 3.4 percent. Last year Symbian and Android were neck and neck with just over 1 percent between them. The picture is much different now, with Symbian losing much of its smartphone market share within the space of a year.

Reasons for the Rise of Android
The Consumer Insights Director at Kantar Worldpanel, Mr Dominic Sunnebo, had this to say about why Android has ended up on top. “We are seeing much of the Android sales growth being driven by consumers trading up from feature phones to smartphones. Android handsets currently offer an easier platform to enable these consumers to upgrade, as many first time smartphone consumers state ‘price of handset’ and ‘multimedia capabilities’ as their main reason for choosing an Android device.”

The Rise of the Smartphone
More and more people are migrating from standard mobile phones to smartphones, and it is a trend that is predicted to continue. The future of these powerful mobile devices looks bright, and that fact that every year more and more hi-tech handsets are released onto world markets signals there is no lack of demand for them. New smartphones are blurring the boundaries of exactly what the device is, a mobile computer or simply a powerful mobile phone, and has caused home gadget insurance companies to revaluate how they provide cover for such expensive items. With all the different accessories and apps available to customise smartphones, they can be used for thousands of different purposes, from a credit card scanning machine at a shop checkout to a computer gaming device. Only time will tell if Android can hold the lead and become a word that is synonymous with smartphone and tablet.

So perhaps it doesn’t come as much of a shock that this year, E3 has seen an influx of mobile gaming companies, clamouring to showcase their wares to the world. So put away your next-gen consoles and your super fast computer – mobile gaming is taking the world by storm. Here are some of the highlights:

GREE: The Facebook of Mobile Gaming

Most ‘hardcore’ gamers simply cringe whenever they hear the world ‘social’ applied to their beloved gaming. So while social games might not have been at the top of the agenda for E3, social-giant GREE were determined to make themselves heard. This Japanese social gaming network led the charge for mobile gaming companies, showcasing 6 snazzy new games while flexing its virtual muscles. These brand new titles include:

• Resident Evil VS – The classic survival horror arrives on the mobile platform, complete with social integration. Soon, you’ll be able to shoot, stab and attempt to survive the undead apocalypse. All from the comfort of your mobile phone.
• Gang Domination – A social card game akin to Mafia Wars, albeit with a Texas Hold’em slant. Run your mob and take on other gangsters – even engage in some PVP with your friends.
• Wacky Motors – Essentially a social version of Mario Kart, this new racing game by GREE has a lot of potential. Race alongside your friends and customize your vehicle, from cool paintjobs to awesome vehicular weaponry.

But that’s not all. GREE will also be teaming up with 2K games to produce social versions of the gaming classics, Civilization and Pirates! If that’s not something to be excited about, I don’t know what is… social integration could be exactly what’s needed to breathe new life into these old, classic formats. So it seems that GREE have pushed out all the stops for E3… could this be a sign that the mobile gaming industry is becoming that little bit more hardcore?

Upcoming Games Announced

Of course, there are plenty of other awesome new titles just around the corner. Whether it’s beat ‘em ups, puzzle games or online RPGs, it seems there’s something for everyone.

• The Amazing Spiderman – One of the most exciting announcements for mobile gaming, The Amazing Spiderman promises stunning 3D open world gameplay. Take down criminals and swing from building to building in Gamesloft’s action-packed adventure game.
• Motley Blocks – This inventive new puzzle game by Square Enix puts a brand new spin on the mobile puzzle genre. A strange mixture of Tetris and join the dots, Motley Blocks requires quick wits and dextrous digits if you want to stay ahead.
• Demons’ Score – A weird and wonderful combination of Guitar Hero and Quake 3, this rhythm-based fighting game is like Parappa the Rapper but with hordes of evil demons. Based on the Unreal 3 engine, Demons’ Score is highly original… if a bit messed up.
• Project Dragon – Previously known only as ‘The Project’, this amazing concept is a cross-platform MMORPG that will run on Android, iOS and even PC. Project Dragon aims to bring PC-based MMORPG gaming to mobile devices and from what we’ve seen so far, it just might succeed.

Android Gaming Pads

Not content with a massive new range of games, the mobile industry has pushed the boat out even further, in the form of some brand new gaming pads for Android devices.

• NVidia have taken to the mobile market, helping Nyko to create the PlayPad, a slim-line gaming controller for Android devices. It’s both sleek and portable with all the retro style of an old-school NES controller. But with Bluetooth connectivity and button remapping, it’s a hell of a lot more.
• The Power-A by MOGA is an awesome new controller that shows real progression in mobile gaming. This controller just screams ‘next-gen console’ and a quick glimpse reveals obvious inspiration from the Xbox 360 – a design which most gamers will be very familiar with.

So as you can see, there have been some real developments in Android gaming this year, but will they lead to mobile gaming being taken more seriously? At this rate, we’ll have to wait until E3 2013 to find out.
